HOW THIS UNUSUAL DOCUMENTARY BEGAN
Last year, while scouting locations in eastern North Dakota for a film
project, driving back-country roads, photographing landscapes and
farms, we ended up in a small, prairie town, which doesn't appear on
most maps - it was called Newford.
We had no idea this simple diversion would change the course of our next project and our lives for a long time to come.
It had been a particularly tiring day and we were happy to discover the
Corner Café was open until nine o'clock. A quick warm meal and we'd
be on our way back to the motel. After we told the owner we were
documentary filmmakers, he became more enthusiastic and introduced us
to a middle-aged man who was eating quietly at a booth behind us.
Had we heard about this man? About his story? It had been in the
local papers and was the talk of town for quite some time? How could
we have missed it?
The man's name was Karl Larsen. He was
soft-spoken, unassuming, but very friendly and after pleasantries and a
cup of coffee on us, he reluctantly began to relate in a North Dakota
accent what had happened to him, how his life had changed unexpectedly
one day about a year ago.
By the end of the evening, we knew we
had our next project - Karl's story. A revelation of a strange and
mysterious underworld never before known, and how this world collided
one day, quite by accident, in a small North Dakota town with an
average delivery man of quality frozen foods.
We found Karl's
story almost too hard to believe, but the deeper we dug in our
investigation, the more facts we uncovered, the more we believed his
story - especially when our own lives were threatened.
But Karl had warned us.
